The album charts the extraordinary pioneering role of legendary Jamaican music artist Laurel Aitken. The journey takes us through the rural sounds of the Mento and Calypso styles, and features long-since-deleted sides. 1957's "Ghana Independence (They Got It)" includes some of the earliest Rasta hand drumming found to date, and predates the Prince Buster-produced Folkes Brothers tune "Oh Carolina" by three years!
The album moves on to embrace Laurel's role as the forerunner in Jamaican Blues, which is reminiscent of late-fifties US R'n'B style, with groundbreaking Jamaican-recorded tunes such as "Aitken's Boogie."
