A cute package of '80s retro that was strictly written with a Casio keyboard. With the four-track recordings of Answering Machine Music: A Brief Album in Twelve Parts, one couldn't get more indie than Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. But this one-man ensemble (Owen Ashworth) has a charming innocence. Here he is gushing his heart out into a two-dollar microphone with personal tales of love lost, while a background of minimal, sloppy rhythmic synthesizers supplies his sometimes gravelly voice. Playful but not in an overly adorable way, lo-fi but not in an unlistenable way, and fun in a bouncy, happy-go-lucky way.
